Reading:  Romans 5.1-5

Think of a time when you have persevered or endured in the faith.  Why were you so steadfast during this time?  How did your steadfastness during this time build your character (inner resolve and values) as a follower of Jesus?

Reading:  Exodus 15.22 – Exodus 16.36

Reflections:  What light do these events of Exodus 15 and Exodus 16 shed on the events of Exodus 17.1-7?  What events or circumstances often overshadow God’s record of faithful activity in your life?  What kinds of things cause you to forget God’s faithfulness?

Readings:  Exodus 17.1-7, Romans 5.1-11

Reflections:

1.  Think of some of the physical places where you have struggled or wrestled in life:  with your faith or with another issue.  If you could rename those places based on the struggles you had there, what would call them?

2.  Think of some of the physical places where you have sensed or experienced the significance of God’s grace and goodness.  If you could rename those places based on God’s faithfulness, what would you call them?

3.  What factors have been present in your life when you have built “monuments to faithlessness”?  What facotrs have been present in your life when you have built “monuments to faithfulness” in your life?

Reading:  Genesis 12.10-20

Reflections:  Genesis 12.1-9 make it clear that God is going to bless Abraham so that he and his family can be a blessing to the world around them.  In Genesis 12.10-20, as Abraham encounters the Egyptians he does not necessarily live up to this promise God has given him in 12.1-4.  Why does he not live up to this promise?  What causes him NOT to be a blessing to the Egyptians?  How do you see these same kinds of things at work in your own life when you forget to be a blessing to others?

Reading:  Genesis 11

Reflections:  The story of the Tower of Babel tells us that great confusion has come into the world and has made it difficult for people to live together in peace.  In Abraham, God is choosing one of the many families of the earth.  Through Abraham’s tiny family, God will offer great blessings to the world.  God has also chosen you to carry a blessing for the world.  What makes you an unlikely candidate for this job?  How do you sense God has called you to be a blessing to the world around you?

Reading:  Genesis 1.27-12.9 and John 3.1-17

Reflections:

1.  Think about the world around you.  What barriers do you see that prevent people from experiencing the promises of God?

2.  Which of these barriers have been or are at work in your own life?

3.  Think of several phrases or words that you can use to “bless” Jesus.  What are these words?

4.  Where do you go to offer “blessings” to Jesus?  Where is your place for blessing him and receiving his blessing?

Reading:  Psalm 32.1-11

Reflection:  As those who are “in Jesus Christ” we no longer live under the burden of sin and death.  Read this Psalm aloud several times as a Psalm that is true of the new life that you live in Jesus.
